Let's begin with some TERMINOLOGY for VeteranGraves.com:

Visitor
Someone who visits and uses the site without Registering.

Volunteer
Someone who Registers on the site to participate:

  1. enter a cemetery into the system
  2. enter a veteran grave into the system
  3. upload photos
  4. suggest edits
  5. adopt a veteran grave

Adopt
When someone commits to personally caring for a veteran's physical grave:

  1. keep the veteran headstone clean
  2. install a flag holder
  3. display a grave flag 365 days a year
  4. pull weeds
  5. pick up debris from atop a veteran grave
  6. organize the hiring of a professional to reset a veteran headstone

Sponsor
Someone who pays to help care for 1 or more veteran graves.

Grave
Online memorial for a veteran on VeteranGraves.com.

Reset
Digging up a headstone or grave marker that is sunken, leaning, or fallen and then installing the stone to proper height, plumb, and level.

Grave Flag
Small American flag with dimensions 8" tall x 12" wide mounted on a 24" long stick.

Flag Holder
A device installed in a cemetery next to a veteran grave marker for the purpose of displaying a grave flag upright while protecting the flag from lawn maintenance equipment.

Cemetery Contact
A person who personally looks after a cemetery, is capable of answering questions, and has the authority to grant permission.

Family Member
A person who has a familial relationship with the deceased veteran.

Stone
A headstone or grave marker.

Headstone
Vertical orientation, above ground, upright, etched stone, marking a burial site.

Grave Marker
Horizontal orientation, ground level, flat, etched stone or bronze plaque, marking a burial site.


Visitors can visit the VeteranGraves.com site and view Graves.

A Visitor must become a Volunteer by Registering in order to: Add Cemeteries, Add Graves, upload photos, and make edits.

Add Cemetery:

  • Click on the "Add Cemetery" button.
  • Step 1 is to enter the required and requested information into the data fields.
  • Step 2 is to upload Photos:
    • Click the "Add Photos" button.
    • We have requested specific photos from specific vantage points.
    • Please pay close attention to the description of the photo description before selecting a photo to insert in that spot.
    • BE SURE TO CLICK THE "SAVE AND CONTINUE" button before uploading the next photo!
  • Step 3 is to add Cemetery Contacts
    • Click the "Add Contact" button
    • Enter the contact person information into the data fields
    • You can add more than one contact, so answer "Yes" for the Primary Contact Person.

Add Grave:

  • Click on the "Add Grave" button.
  • Step 1 is to choose a Cemetery existing in the system.
    • If the Cemetery is not already in the system, then you will have to Add Cemetery.
  • Step 2 is to click on the Cemetery name hotlink.
  • Step 3 is to enter the Veteran's primary identification information.
  • Step 4 is to enter additional detail information by clicking the "Edit Grave" button.
    • On the left side of the Grave page for the Veteran, you will see hotlinks to four categories including:
      • Veteran
      • Grave Info
      • Military
      • Hero Story
    • Click on each of these four hotlinks to access the various data fields relevant to a military veteran.
  • Step 5 is to upload Photos:
    • Click the "Add Photos" button.
    • We have requested specific photos from specific vantage points.
    • Please pay close attention to the description of the photo description before selecting a photo to insert in that spot.
    • BE SURE TO CLICK THE "SAVE AND CONTINUE" button before uploading the next photo!
