"The first established Lutheran and Reformed congregation in the Connecticut Western Reserve was in Canfield. This congregation built their first church in 1810. "An overwhelming number of the early members of this church (Zion Lutheran and Reformed) were natives of Lehigh (Northampton until 1812) and Berks counties, Pennsylvania, who came to settle in Canfield, Austintown, and Ellsworth townships. Lynn and Heidelberg townships in Lehigh and Greenwich Township in Berks are particularly well represented. There were two major waves of migration – one in 1804/1805 and a second in the late 1820's." Among the families who were early members of this church were: Arners, Bachmans, Baileys, Borts, Brunstetters, Butts, Corlls, Crums, Crumrines, Dustmans, Everetts, Finks, Franks, Fulks, Gilberts, Grabers, Hardings, Lynns, Millers, Neffs, Neiers, Ohls, Osborns, Oswalds, Peters, (Petry-Petre) Ritters, Stitles, Strocks, Wannemakers, Wehrs, and Whitsels. Records are lost. The church was destroyed by fire in 1845, and again in 1894."
