Mahoning Dispatch, Fri, 20 Aug 1897, Article No. 31, by Dr. Jackson Truesdale
"Martin and Jacob Whitzell were brothers and were of the first party of German settlers. They arrived in Canfield on election day, the second Tuesday of October, 1804. Martin was married, Jacob was single. Martin is said to have purchased two 60-acre lots about one and a quarter miles north of the center. He was a blacksmith and worked at his trade a hard working industrious and respected man. He died in August, 1811. His widow afterwards married Daniel Wannamaker and moved to Liberty. When he died she returned to Canfield and died in 1819. Mary, the oldest daughter of Martin, married Samuel Gilbert; Susan to Jacob Wise; Catherine to Jacob Dustman, a former landlord at the Black Horse hotel in Canfield. Jacob, the brother of Martin, purchased and settled on the farm now occupied by Adam Brobst and, I think, erected the buildings yet to be found on the farm where he died in 1855. He had a wife for a short time, but most of his life was spent as a lonely hermit."
